The Bible You Thought You Knew

The Women of the Exodus

Episode Summary

The Book of Exodus is usually thought of as a man's story, the tale of the Israelites' struggle and the lifelong conflict between Moses and the Pharaoh of Egypt. However, women do play a big role in the story of the Exodus, and this episode tells you everything about their role in the liberation of the Israelites.

Episode Notes

In the popular imagination, the Book of Exodus is a story centered around men, and men only. Women have no place in it, and we rarely hear about them.

Well, today, I am here to argue the opposite. Women do play an important role in the Book of Exodus!

In fact, the contrast between these many women and Moses and the Pharaoh is present throughout the story as we learn everything about them, from how the midwives Shiphrah and Puah opposed the king of Egypt, to how Moses’ wife, Zipporah, saved him from God’s wrath.

Who were these women? What part did they play in the Exodus of the Israelites? And how did they use their wits and intelligence to start their own revolutions?

This episode of The Bible You Thought You Knew answers all these questions and more. So, tune in, and learn everything you need to know about the seven women in the Book of Exodus, their lives, their quiet fights, and how their use of soft power shaped the story of the Israelites.
